| Downrange (continued) More images from my stint in the Sandbox in 2006. I spent most of my deployment at Al Udeid Air Base, in Qatar. Here's the Motley Crew of Chaplains and Chaplain assistants with whom I worked there. We're posing in front of Jack's Cafe, a landmark place at Al Udeid to relax and enjoy a cup of java; it's one of the ministries of the chaplains there. 'Shepherd 1' is one of the little Daewoo trucks in which we got around to visit people on the base. (The chap in front in the truck in the uniform with the different pattern is a British RAF chaplain.) The best part of being based at Al Udeid was the opportunity to take excursions into Doha, the capital city of the small emirate. Doha's skyline is very modern, and yet you always know you're in the Arab World. Doha has a huge and very modern shopping mall, City Centre (but we Americans call it the BAM, an acronym for 'Big Ass Mall'). Here I'm enjoying a little shopping with two colleagues, Master Sargeant Kenny Lynch (center) and Chaplain Valentino McNeal (right). But the most fun was relaxing at the Intercontinental Hotel in Doha. Here I am by the pool with my good friend and colleague, Chaplain Mike Gilbert. Yo ho, Mateys! We be pirates! Herre we are at the Intercontental's beach. Isn't this a great way to fight a war??! Arrrgh, you bet it is! | |
